The recent closing of WalMart has had a significant impact on the SPCA in several areas. WalMart has always donated their torn bags of dog/cat food to the SPCA which we have depended upon to feed the pets in our shelter. Thanks to their donations and the generosity of private donors, we typically have not had to purchase dog/cat food. With the Livingston WalMart closing, the SPCA is facing the prospect of having to purchase a significant amount of the dog/cat food required to feed the 80+ animals currently residing at our facility. This is an item that we have never had to budget for in the past and will place a significant strain on our limited financial resources. To avoid constant diet changes, we try to feed Purina or Pedigree dog/puppy food and Purina cat/kitten food to the pets at the shelter. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
Historically, the SPCA has provided Food Assistance to numerous low-income families in Polk County who are struggling to feed their pets. The Food Assistance program has always been dependent upon us adequate donations to continue the program. Due to the limited availability of pet food, we are forced to suspend the Food Assistance program until further notice. We understand that this will place a hardship on families who are already struggling to feed their pets but have no other option available to us at this time. We sincerely appreciate your understanding during this difficult period.
The SPCA of Polk County is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Corporation and does not receive any funding from the State of Texas, Polk County, the City of Livingston or any other agencies. We are totally dependent upon donations from the community for the continuation of our programs.
