Seniors for Seniors

Golden Oldies

Calm Companions to Fit Your Lifestyle

According to studies, pets are medicine. Holding a pet reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, and combats depression. But puppies and kittens are hard work--they require round-the-clock observation, constant interaction, and must go to the bathroom every 2-3 hours. And that's not even mentioning their ENERGY--those little powerhouses seem to never sleep, and leave chewed shoes and clawed curtains in their wake. Sounds exhausting, right? Thankfully, there's a solution--cue "Golden Oldies"!

What Is "Golden Oldies"?

Golden Oldies is a program that pairs retirees with seniors. If you are 55 or older and you adopt a senior animal (any cat or dog over 7), the adoption fee is only $25.

Why Seniors Are the Best

Senior pets are calm, quiet, and would rather take a nap with you than snack on your sneakers. Most have already been trained and house-broken, too, making them the perfect low-maintenance companions. Seniors are the hardest group of animals to adopt out, so they are forced to spend their golden years stuck in a kennel, rather than cozied up on a rug by your feet, which is all that they really want. Most critters that live to be elderly do so because they are well taken care of, meaning they are used to love and care; they don't understand why they are at the shelter, and they want nothing more than to be loved by you.

Momma was found abandoned in the woods with 9 little puppies. She was scared at first, and it took a while to earn her owner's trust. Momma is a sweet, cuddly girl, but she does get jealous of other dogs being with her master, so it would be best for her to go to a single-dog family. She minds very well and behaves in the house, and she is potty-trained and loves to snuggle. She is currently at the home of a foster, so please call the shelter at (936) 327-7722 to set up a time to meet her.

This precious boy was surrendered after his owner died. He has known no home but the one he shared with his beloved master, so now he feels misplaced and overwhelmed at the shelter. Please give this handsome boy the stable, loving home that he so deserves!

Stevie is a gentle giant. He is a loyal, friendly boy who needs a lot of room to run--he may be a senior, but he has a youthful spirit. Due to being passed around from home-to-home so frequently, he has developed separation anxiety, so he will need to go to someone who is home a lot, and who understands that he has felt abandoned in the past. He is full of life and love, and his only desire is to be with you.

Sweet Bitzy was left all alone when her beloved owner went to Heaven. He had no relatives who could take her in, so this precious girl was brought to us. She went from living a quiet life with her best friend to being stuck in a cage surrounded by noise and chaos--this poor baby doesn't understand what happened. Give Bitzy the peace and love that her tiny little heart needs, and she will be your closest companion.
